Welcome to Small Soldier
• On this channel, I'll offer you high-quality build videos, reviews of kits, tools, modelling products and informative tutorials.
• All the content is based on my modelling techniques and the knowledge of this hobby I've acquired over the last 41 years.
• Additionally, I was the owner of a military-themed hobby store from 2005 - 2010 called "Small Soldier" and this is a continuation of that endeavour. Teaching customers how to build and paint their models was the mainstay of what my shop was really all about and the most enjoyable part of it for me.
• I hope you find my content as enjoyable as I have in creating it. It's really all about the enjoyment of this great hobby anyway.
• If you have any questions or want to request a topic or tutorial just leave a comment on any of my videos and I'll consider it for a future video.
• Uploading videos... We'll play it by ear. Cheers!

Wow and wow again sir. Incredible craftmanship on this video series. So glad I found that initial Tamiya Spitfire video. I'm going to thoroughly enjoy being subscribed to your channel.
Subscribing is not a wasted effort on your channel sir. Thank you from England.
Greetings from England. As a person who is guilty of getting from A to Z by missing out the other 24 letters, this is very educational and helpful. The results of your patience are there as evidence of great work. Thank you, I'm learning sir.
Is that clever, or what! The idea in the first place was a wonderful tribute. To make it real is amazing. Hats off to you sir.
I'm English (all say never mind) and still a newby but as you suggested in your recent reply to my appreciation of your Spitfire build, which was brilliant, I have started at the beginning and I'm hooked sir. Subscribed and enjoying what I have seen. The "posh" upper crust English accent at the end wasn't at all bad. So much better than Dick Van Dyke's bruising cockney accent in Mary Poppins. I'm an old cockney and found it hilarious. He's still good though. Again sir, I'm hooked.
凄いリアルですね!
Not sure how to reply, I don’t speak that language. Thanks I guess.
una bella mano!!!
Hey brother! Would love to see you get back at it with some smaller projects! Don't burn yourself out! Some 1/35 figures always gets the mojo up!
Almost six years late but this was definitely worth seeking out, took a while and I've been searching. Excellent tips and the 40 mins is just right. It's quite hard to find long form videos that go into a good amount of detail. Thanks 👍 I can't remember what my first childhood kit was, but my first kit returning to the hobby was a P51-D, immediately followed by this kit - neither looked this good, of course 😅😬
@@jamfjord Thanks m8! I’m so glad you found this video and it was useful to you. Long form videos are rare because they take so long to make and if they flop it takes me awhile to get motivated to do another. Anyway thanks for watching!🙌🏻🍻
Fantastic work! Do you have a list of all the colors you used?
@@ech0tang0 Thank you. NoI don’t have a list for that… sorry.
Q: Which medium you prefer oils or acrylics ?
so how many clear coats are you applying, if you're doing a clear coat between each oil layer.
@@BuzzkillZone The clear coats are used on some coats not all. Some times the paint has dried and I don’t Need a clear.
So could I get some more detail about how your thin your paint so you don't destroy the layer beneath? You said you add thinner to your palette. It helps the paint dry faster, more matter, and flows off the brush better. But when I do it, it destroys the underlying layers. So I wonder what you are doing different. If you covered this already, could you point me to the video? thank you.
@@BuzzkillZone The paint is more like a glaze which dries really fast. Some paint like the highlight areas is more opaque and will take more time to dry. You have to work fast when using this technique this is why I use the thinner to dilute the paint so it dries quicker. You can also use a heat lamp to dry the oils faster. Hope that helps.
@@SmallSoldier Thank you. Next time I try I'll thin it down to a glaze and see how things go.
I've just caught up with your channel and having this kit in my stash I had to watch. I'm an ageing resumer but want to give it my best shot.I'm getting there (I think). The days are gone when as a kid too many years ago the Airfix figure of Julius Caesar had a red gloss cloak, groan. Wonderful finish to this kit sir, I can only hope and remember more haste less speed. Is there a video for the figure and setting, I did look but it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that this old codger kept missing it. Respect from England.
@@normansmith8184 thanks m8! No video for the figure yet. Hopefully I can get to that eventually. I do however have several videos on my channel dedicated to figure modelling and painting. Check out the other content I’m sure you’ll learn a thing or two.
@SmallSoldier Ah, bless you sir. Thanks for the reply and invaluable info. Guess what I'll be doing today! Thanks again and all the best.
5:18 some white tack on a cocktail stick or some q tips dipped in beeswax
Love everything but not the deck color . I m surprised you did not weathered it to give a wooden aspect
Excellent build thank you
You're very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Please consider subscribing to my channel if you haven't already. Thanks!🙂
Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it. I'm glad this helped with your decision-making. Yes, many kits have become paint mules. Consider subscribing to my channel if you haven't already done so. Thanks so much!
Should I apply x22 gloss before applying decals ?
You can but I prefer Alclad 2 Aqua Gloss clear "ALC 600". I find I get better results than with X22. If you can't get the Alclad stuff make sure you thin the X22 with either Mr Leveling thinner 400 or the Tamiya Lacquer thinner "retarder type" with the orange cap which is similar to the MLT. Hope that "clears" 😉 things up. Cheers!
@@SmallSoldier tamiya x20A thinner not good for this ? I only have this type of thinner and in online people say its ok cause its not a enamel paint so you dont need laquer thinner
@@OdysseyAviation it’s not great tbh. If you can get the Tamiya orange cap it’ll work best.
Way to come back out punching!
Huh well there ya go I had no idea that dry brushing was not a thing! Great video
Thank you very much! Yes, it's still a relevant technique if used correctly. 🍻
Great video with some amazing tips. Thanks!
Thank you... and you're most welcome!🍻
Здравствуйте. Хорошие работы у Вас. Есть чему учиться. Но зачем лезть в политику ?
Sorry, I'm not sure what politics you're referring to?
@@SmallSoldier может быть был перевод не точный. что за книга для украины? зто ваша книга. вы её продаёте? спасибо за общение. извините если обидел вас
@@user-tz4wf4qj5s No offence taken m8. Are you referring to the review I did for "Models for Ukraine"?
@@SmallSoldier да
С удовольствием смотрю Ваше творчество. Есть чему учиться. Спасибо. Зачем лезть в политику? Помогайте остановить войну а не разжигать её.
Thank you. Yes agreed! I'd like to see the war end as well. It doesn't do anyone any good other than create sadness. 🙌
Nicely done, lots of good advice here. Great to see you posting again.
Thank you very much Glen! I'm happy you like my content. Cheers!
Great video, as always. Love those shadows from the wolf, I never noticed those in the previous pics I saw!
Hey... thanks Howard! Glad you made time to watch. I sure appreciate it. Yes the cast shadows are subtle, maybe I should have gone a little further with it? 🙌🙂
If you haven't seen the whole video yet, please take some time and give it a watch. There's a lot of information and tips that may help you get better results when painting your miniatures. Thanks to all who support me and my channel, I'm grateful for each and every one of you. Cheers!🍻
Здравствуйте. хорошая работа. есть чему поучиться. Не надо политики. не надо войны. это ужасно.
Great great job 😊
Thanks!🙂🙌🏻
Looks great 👍👍
Thank you!🙂🙌🏻
Informative tutorial. Excellent results. I like the Wolf rider, too. Happy modeling ✨️. Bill
Glad you liked it. Thanks!🙌🏻🙂
Looking good as always! I’ve always liked the depth of your work.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment sir! 🙌
If I use only Mark Fit strong will it do work for decals ?
Well like anything I would do some tests if you can before trying it on your model, especially if you’re not familiar with the product. It really depends on which companies decals your using. Some decals work great with Micro Sol others are thicker and tougher which makes them difficult to conform so I like to use Solvaset for those. Be careful as some decal solutions will make the decal prints run or discolour. I hope this helps with your decisions.🙂🙌🏻
@@SmallSoldier well the spitfire from Tamiya will be my first build and I have some mark fit strong with it
@@OdysseyAviation I’ve used mark fit and it’ll work. You may need something a bit stronger if it’s being stubborn like micro soul. Good luck I hope your build goes well. 🙂🙌🏻
I also have other question . Do you think 17mL of dark green RAF color and 17mL of Brown RAF color will be enought for this build ?
I have MarkFit strong from Tamiya
Did u used extra thin cement for this whole build ?
Yes… yes I did. The parts fit so incredibly well there was no need for anything else.
So, this video inspired me to try something with a base. I did up an RP models Lt Albert Cairns VC, in 75 mm. Long story short, I won best in class at Fredericton CAMS spring classic
Wow… that’s absolutely fantastic! Congratulations man! I’m glad I could help inspire some part in your success. Where’s my royalty cheque!😂😂
👍
Love this finish Scott, didn't realize it was your first fantasy project. I'm glad to see you back 😁
Thanks Chris!🙌🏻 Yeah it was a fun project but really took a lot out of me. I find it’s hard to stay consistent on UA-cam. Thanks for watching I appreciate the support considering this video is not performing very well.🤔
My friend this video was a mine of knowledge. The candle and ca glue trick is crazy. Always good tips from pros . Subscribed.
Thank you sir, I’m so glad it was helpful. Yeah the candle and ca trick has saved me lots of $$$$. Cheers
Wow, a piece of art, thank you for sharing
Thanks! 🙌
Pants booted Small Dude! TFS, GB :)
😂 thank you!
@@SmallSoldier Was gonna say Arse booted but thought I'd keep it clean 👍
?? Tips? Watching you clean up a figure without saying anything? Really……
Sorry you we're offended by this video. You need to realize this was one of my early videos where I was trying to figure out lighting, sound, camera and editing software. I agree a voice over would have made this even better and if you watch any of my later videos pretty much everything has a very descriptive voice over and captions. You also should realize how much time and effort these videos take to create. I'm not doing this full time and try and produce the best possible product I can in the limited time I have to do it in... so I'd appreciate you taking all these factors into consideration. Thanks for you're feedback.
Amazing work ❤
Thank you very much!🙂
